The Junior Common Room (JCR) Levy is excellent value for money, providing voting rights in JCR meetings, subsidised access to sports teams and societies, as well as subsidised entry to many large events that take place in college throughout the year and the college gym. On top of this, the levy crucially contributes to the overall running of the JCR and the activities within it, especially those in Induction Week, as well as funding many aspects of college life. The vast majority of undergraduates join the JCR; around 95% of new students signed up for membership of Aidan's JCR in 2018!
The Levy itself costs £150, paid in full at the start of your first year. However, this provides membership of the JCR for the duration of your course. For example, if you're studying a three year degree such as History, you will remain a member for all three years, in effect costing you £50 per year.
As of this year, you have to opt-in to pay the JCR Levy and receive the benefits listed above. This one time charges also means you won't be subject to paying a premium for most of the JCR activities; the extent of the premium is specific to the particular activity and will be publicised appropriately. For example, if you are non-member you will pay more to attend JCR events such as formals and summer ball. Ultimately, paying the levy ensures you have full access to the St Aidan's undergraduate community, a decision which year on year students feel is both worthwhile and value for money!
